Teresa Wingar

Kinburn, Ontario

Teresa is a country girl, she trained and apprenticed in England as a functional potter and has been working in clay for over 45 years and living in Canada for 37 years.
Moving to her rural Kinburn studio from her suburban basement workspace, reawoke her love of slipware with its fluid lines and textured effects and her functional pots soon became practical art.
Decorating with slip allows you to "draw" on your ceramics with liquid clay, creating slightly raised patterns and designs that invite both the eye and the hand to explore.
Slipware has many challenges, especially on stoneware clay and has become a lifelong endeavor to master for Teresa.
In old school style, she mixes her clay slips and glazes and incorporates both natural oxides and underglaze stains for the many colours.
Her work has a ‘new antique’ aesthetic and shows influences from her love of historic slipware, textiles and design from historic Medieval times through to the18th century.
Her designs use her interpretation of the patterns she sees in nature or even in the fabric of someone’s dress or handbag!
The pieces are highly decorated, tactile yet functional, which is important to her.

Her rural Kinburn Studio is open to visit by appointment as are her gardens.
