Teresa Wingar ‍ ‍

Kinburn, Ontario

Teresa is an English country girl at heart, with rural Devon and Hampshire roots.
Her training started early at school through to art college, she also apprenticed as a functional potter and has been working in clay for over 46 years and living in Canada for 39 years.

Moving from a suburban basement workspace to her rural Kinburn studio, reawoke her fondness of slipware with its fluid lines and textured effects and so her functional pots soon became practical art.

Slip decorating is to pipe liquid clay on to your damp pot, creating slightly raised patterns that invite both the eye and the hand to explore.
However, slipware does have many challenges, especially on stoneware clay because of high shrinkage and so has become a lifelong endeavor to master for Teresa.

Her work has a ‘new antique’ aesthetic and shows influences from her love of historic English slipware, textiles and design from Medieval times through to the19th century including Persian art and the Arts and Craft movement of William Morris.
Her designs use her interpretation of historical patterns, what she sees in nature or even in the fabric of someone’s dress or handbag!

Her pieces are highly decorated yet are truly functional pots, which is important to her.
