Maria Moldovan
Arnprior, Ontario
Maria Moldovan is a Romanian-born ceramic artist, painter and illustrator based in Arnprior, Ontario.
She studied painting before earning a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Arts and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and moved to Canada with her family in 2013. She is now a full-time studio artist and teaches ceramics at the Ottawa School of Art.
Maria’s work brings together sculpture and drawing, combining figures, animals, landscapes and architectural elements in unexpected, dreamlike compositions.
Working primarily with handbuilding techniques, she gives particular attention to the surface of her pieces, layering texture, carving, drawing, underglaze and glaze to create objects that feel both intimate and narrative.
Her background in painting and children’s book illustration is evident in the distinctive visual language of her ceramics.
