Toronto-based artist Lauren Blakey studied at Sheridan College before completing her undergraduate degree at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Her ceramic work resists traditional categories of sculpture or function, instead exploring the materiality and sensuality of clay.
Inspired by the natural world, Blakey’s practice reflects contrasts such as growth and decay, strength and fragility.
“The surfaces of moss, lichens, and algae embody these juxtapositions,” she notes. “They reveal the passage of time, blemished, worn, yet layered with renewal.”
Her geologically inspired forms suggest relics unearthed from the earth or sea; fragile remains that embody transformation while carrying traces of the past.
