KATHRIN VON DEHN
Ottawa, Ontario
I am a self-taught potter based in Ottawa, working from my home studio where I create hand-built, functional ceramics rooted in curiosity and organic form. My journey with clay began a decade ago, following a background in fine art, goldsmithing, and jewelry design. This foundation deeply informs my work, especially in my attention to detail, surface texture, and form.
Hand-building allows me to explore the unique, expressive potential of clay—each piece is an opportunity to play with rhythm, balance, and the subtle irregularities that make handmade work so alive.
The surface of clay is a rich canvas for texture and illustration, and I often draw inspiration from the natural world—seed pods, insects, flowers, and leaves inform the shapes and surface patterns of my work.
While I primarily focus on functional ware, I’m increasingly interested in expanding into installation pieces, lighting, and mobiles composed of unglazed clay elements. These ideas are an exciting evolution of my practice, allowing me to scale up my forms and explore space in new ways.
Teaching both children and adults has been a meaningful part of my journey. I value the exchange of knowledge and the vibrant community of potters who continue to inspire and challenge me.
